Turn Your iPhone Into a Desk Phone

5:20 pm by Admin. Filed under: Geek Games

There are a few desktop handsets for your iPhone, but this one is quite minimal, which makes it more attractive than some of the others out there. I guess something like this makes sense if you’re using the iPhone as your main home phone.

iphone_desktop_handset

The anodized aluminum iPhone Desktop Handset acts like a base and receiver for your iPhone. It allows you to make calls and receive them without having to hold the iPhone. The base can even charge your iPhone while it cradles it – using your own charging cable.

It’s available for (USD) from Hammacher Schlemmer. If that’s too much for you, you can probably hack your own – or you could just hold your iPhone to your ear.

What is Love?

What is love? I asked my children what love is.

My dear son shook his head and ran away. He is 13 so that is to be expected. My dear daughter says love is how she feels about her Littlest Pet Shop toys and her houses. Those are her favorite toys, so I guess that is what she loves at the moment.

Love is my family and my home! Valentines day is coming up soon and are you prepared?  In some towns, reservations are made to fancy restaurants almost to a year in advance. To get great deals on flowers, it seriously is best to order them in January and have them delivered in Feb. Yes, you can do that!

Even if you  do not have the funds or the time for reservations, dinners, flowers or chocolate, cards say a lot. I always tell the hubby , DO NOT FORGET MY CARD if nothing else.

One of my favorite sites to order cards is TinyPrints.com. I used them for my baby shower invites and my Christmas cards and they do an excellent job! They have an awesome Valentine day selection to choose from.

Don’t forget !!

Tiny Prints provides simple, modern and unique stationery from Valentines Day cards to personalized greeting cards to thank you cardsbusiness cards, and even custom wedding invitations. Offering exclusive designs from the nation’s top designers, easy card personalization, a powerful preview engine and top-notch customer service and paper quality, their designs have been lauded by numerous television networks, publications and celebrities. With Tiny Prints by your side commemorating every holiday and momentous occasion is a cinch! They offer perfect party invitations for every occasion and memorable personalized photo-gifts like notebooksphoto books and calendars.

Winnitron 1000 Arcade Cabinet: A Token of Hope from Indie Developers

5:49 pm by Admin. Filed under: Geek Games

The video game arcade cabinet is fast becoming a relic of a not so distant past, what with the rise of video game consoles and increasingly powerful and versatile portable video game systems. But a group of Canadian indie developers have turned to the iconic device to bolster their fledgling community. Created by 5 individuals who call their group the Bit Collective, the Winnitron 1000 serves as both an homage to video games and as a way to encourage more people to join the indie video game community, specifically people in Winnepeg, where the first Winnitron 1000 is based.

The roster of games on the Winnitron 1000 is ever-increasing. Currently it has 14 games, including the breakout hit Canabalt. The Bit Collective had a “game jam”, a session where developers made games for the Winnitron 1000:

Just to show you how much potential this pairing has, here’s a couple of trailers for some of the games on the Winnitron 1000. First off is 2-player Canabalt:

Awesome video. It’s funny how the characters look like 8-bit versions of Johnny Cash and Michael Jackson. Here’s one of the more colorful games on the Winnitron 1000,  Super Crate Box Versus:

Here’s a bonus video, where the Winnitron 1000 reveals that it’s self-aware:

Sadly, you’d have to make the pilgrimage to Winnipeg if you want to play on the Winnitron 1000. If you’re in the Netherlands, you’re in luck because a group of Dutch game developers have made their version of the arcade cabinet. The Bit Collective and their friends would love nothing more than for more Winnitrons to be made. You can help by donating, or if you’d like your very own Winnitron arcade cabinet, just contact the Bit Collective. Check out Winnitron 1000′s website for more info.

Fabric Deployable Structures Workshop

6:05 am by Admin. Filed under: Geek Clothes

Here are some photos from the Fabric Deployable Structures workshop that I taught for the Colab Summer Workshop Series.

We spent the morning doing paper shapes exploration based on Miura Ori research from Julian Vincent and University of Bath. I feel that with this sort of exploration it is most satisfying to discover your own shapes. So I started by showing students how to create a few examples, then showed them how to deviate from the standard patterns to create their own models. I thought this would make it possible for students to create their own shapes outside of class.

Then in the afternoon we translated the paper models to fabric and sewed them up into garments. My favorite part of the workshop was working with the fashion students from AUT University. They were really full of energy, and I could practically see their brains churning while they were thinking about the possibilities of what could be made. So hopefully this class will help with their degree projects.

Adsense and Making some Money Online

6:26 pm by Admin. Filed under: Geek Books

A lot of people ask me if I make money with my blog. The answer is Yes. They proceed to ask me, How ?

Well there are several ways  you can earn money with your blog. Do a simple google search “blogging for money” and lots of ways will pop up.  One of the most popular ways is through adsense  and  affiliates. You can write about anything your heart desires like age of war or boxhead

You also can earn money through amazon , but  you need to check to see if your state participates. I live in NC and my state does not let me participate.

Sometimes you do not actually have to make money, but you can get items for free by posting reviews of the items on your blog. For example, I write for a lot of book publishers. They send me the books, I read and review them. In exchange for the book, I post a honest review of how I liked the book.

Blogging for reviews and money is becoming very popular amongst mommy bloggers these days!

All you need to do to get started is to start yourself a blog at wordpress.com , or blogger.com. Start out writing posts and blog for about 6 months, and get it established. After you have established it, start googling some ways to optimize your blog, so Google will pick it up quicker.

Then start looking into making some reviews or money!

Colab Summer Workshop Series

6:41 am by Admin. Filed under: Geek Clothes

This week in New Zealand I have been teaching workshops for the Colab Summer Workshop Series. I taught an inflatables workshop, an EL wire workshop, a fabric deployable structures workshop, and a sewing soft circuits workshop. Below are some images from the EL wire and sewing soft circuits workshop. I’ll post some photos from the other workshops later this week.

For the Sewing Soft Circuits workshop, I made a pattern that I thought would be versatile enough for the students to put in different garments. One of the students brought in a beautiful handmade felt to stitch her circuit on. I thought the weight of the felt was very nice.

Below are some garments made in the EL wire workshop.
