When Parents Text: So Much Said . . . So Little Understood

3:36 am by Admin. Filed under: Geek Books

This book is too cute! I think it would be a great gift for a parent at Christmas time. That time of the seaosn is creeping up on us! This book is funny and very entertaining!  Below, I have included an article and some of my favorite texts from the book.

Make sure you visit the Author’s facebook and twitter page!

Lauren & Sophia’s Favorites
By Lauren Kaelin and Sophia Fraioli,
Authors of When Parents Text: So Much Said . . . So Little Understood

Lauren Kaelin and Sophia Fraioli moved back to their childhood homes after graduating college in 2010. Living under these familiar roofs, now four years older, created an interesting dynamic between parents and their young-adult roommates. Nowhere was this shift more visible then their texting exchanges. “I love and miss you” had become “WHERE ARE YOU COME HOME NOW” and a request to be picked up at 7pm was now, “7 tacos for dinner?”

After hysterically laughing over an exchange between Lauren and her mom one night, the pair decided to start a website dedicated to the trails and errors of parental texting. By December, the site was a viral sensation with over 5 millions hits a month and hundreds of anonymous daily submissions. Lauren and Sophia have read thousands of text messages to update their website and compile their new book, and these still stand out as their favorites.

Church Updates
Dad: So how was your homily?
Me: It was okay. He just kind of repeated the gospel.
Dad: Ours was about Internet Porn.

Piece of Paper
Me: Can we go to yoga tonight?
Mom: Maybe — I really have to find a piece of paper on my desk, though, tonight . . .

Tenderloin Sliders
Me: How’s the bar?
Dad: Yes cool iron sculptures around the TVs
Dad: Has tenderloin sliders with horseradish sauce

The iTunes Store
Dad: would y’all take me to the itunes store . . . i don’t know where its located…is it on S. Congress?

Hearing Aid
Grandpa: I finished the harry potter movie. Couldnt hear half of it because my hearing aid fell out but it was visually stimulating. But not as visually stimulating as Avatar. What is Voldamert’s purpose in life?

Cat Lips
Mom: Would it be weird to tell the neighbor his cat has nice lips?
Me: um . . . yeah.

On Domino’s Delivery Tracking
Dad: Jaun has double checked our order for perfection at 8:08pm! Good job Jaun! He sounds like a nice guy. The internet is a fascinating place.

Bowtie Man
Mom: Can you please call me when you need to be picked up! Don’t do anything stupid! :-) 8
Me: What is that emoticon?
Mom: bowtie man! He doesn’t do anything stupid

Human?
Mom: Our church is going to be on the news tonight
Me: that’s cool! what for?
Mom: A bone washed up in the ditch — They think it’s human.

And the text that started it all . . .

Tacos for Dinner
Mom: Tacos or meatloaf for dinner?
Me: Tacos
Mom: Bring your appetite. When will you be home?
Mom: Eta?
Mom: ???
Me: Can you pick me up at 6:45? My phone is going to die.
Mom: Walnut St?
Me: Yes
Mom: How many tacos?
Me: Might be more like 7.
Mom: Tacos?
Me: No, my train gets in then.
Me: Tacos? 2?
Mom: How many tacos?
Me: Mom, chill with the tacos.

Podcast for 02.23.09 | Ripping Off Gamers for Fun and Profit

3:53 pm by Admin. Filed under: Geek Games

Hey there, denizen of the Internet! Are you interested in what many people (read: zero people) have described as “The View” for the gamer set? Aren’t you in luck! Join me, Jinny, Ross and Ryan as we round up the week’s news. We talk about why none of us has bought Street Fighter IV yet, GTA’s Lost and Damned DLC, how Noby Noby Boy is not a game and actually not very fun at all anyway, Destructoid being one of the most valuable blogs on the Internet (really!), and how Call of Duty can’t *really* make you honor or dishonor the Geneva Convention, no matter what Cory Doctorow says. In addition, thanks for all the mailbag letters this week! We try to answer them all. Enjoy!

Journey Hands On: Flower Creator’s New Opus Forgoes Gameplay For Visuals

4:41 am by Admin. Filed under: Geek Gagdets

Indie games are rarely subtle. We don’t mean gameplay, of course, they’re all kinds of subtle when it comes to subverting gameplay conventions, tackling a player’s frail psyche and anything else you can imagine that can be stretched and ratcheted onto a framework of mechanics. We meant something a lot more trivial than that – the graphics. Indie games are rarely subtle when it comes to what they throw onto your retina.

Giant Circuit Board Dragonfly: Be Glad This Thing Doesn’t Fly

5:14 am by Admin. Filed under: Geek Games

I think I’ve mentioned this before – I’m not really crazy about insects. But for some reason, dragonflies have never really bothered me. They’re big, buzzy and clumsy, but they can’t do any harm, so maybe that’s why I don’t mind them. But if I ever saw a dragonfly with a 32-inch wingspan, I think I’d run the other way.

pcb_dragonfly

That’s exactly what we’ve got here. This giant dragonfly sculpture measures a whopping 32″ (w) x 28″(l) x 7″ (h). The coolest part is that it’s made completely out of discarded printed circuit boards. Not a single surface of this giant bug – including it’s six stick-legs – isn’t made of electronic part-encrusted circuit boards.

pcb_dragonfly_detail

I love how the legs are made of integrated circuits, and those multi-faceted capacitor eyeballs are awesome. This big bug was lovingly crafted by Steve Rodrig of PCB Creations, and is a one-of-a-kind sculpture, perfect for that geek who also has a fondness for insects.

It’s listed right now for 0 (USD) over on Etsy. While you might think that’s a lot to spend on a bunch of old circuit boards, I think it’s actually totally reasonable for all of the work that must have gone onto building this thing.

P.S. Ignore my headline. I think it would be really cool if this thing could fly.

Awkward! To think just yesterday, the most thrilling chapter of the Samsung-Apple wars was featured here at Geeky Gadgets. Seen below is the incriminating evidence with red circles pointing out the icon faux pas.
